Women* in Architecture Belgium is an Instagram page created in 2021 by the joint effort of 8 Belgian architectural institutions and organisations following the initiative of Tine Broos (KRAS architects). The project took shape through her collaboration with the Institut Culturel d’Architecture Wallonie-Bruxelles (ICA), the Centre bruxellois d’architecture et du paysage (CIVA), the Vlaams Architectuur Instituut (VAi), the Vereniging van Interieurarchitecten (AINB), the Federatie van Belgische Architectenverenigingen/Fédération des Architectes de Belgique (FAB), Netwerk Architecten Vlaanderen (NAV), the Wallon Union of Architects (UWA), as well as the ufvAb – Union of Women Architects in Belgium, which has taken over and ensured the continuation of the project since 8 March 2022.
The aim of the project is to create a platform for women* in architecture. Each week, a guest architect takes over the account and offers an insight into her practice and perception of architecture. The often underexposed role of women* in design practice, but also in architectural policy, research and education is highlighted.
#WomeninArchitectureBelgium is a platform that brings together inspiring women* from the Belgian architectural world. For one week, a woman* shares her work and life, her projects, her successes and challenges.
#WomeninArchitectureBelgium is a platform launched to highlight new ways of expressing architecture and to increase the visibility of the women* who are driving this evolution. They demonstrate incredible leadership skills and have a strong chance of becoming role models for future generations.
#WomeninArchitectureBelgium brings together women* working in Belgium in a unique platform to share and represent the practices of women* architects in Belgium today in an involved and inclusive way.
The Women* in Architecture Belgium exhibition features the work of more than 30 architects who participated in the take-over of the page over 104 weeks between 8 March 2021 and 8 March 2023. It presents a portrait of each architect in the form of an artistic collage by architect artist Giulia Lazzara (Cinéma Jolia) as well as a selection of the participants’ projects and research.
